Toronto, ON – Bernard White of Oshawa has a hilarious tale about how he discovered he’d won the $40 million LOTTO MAX jackpot from the February 21, 2025 draw. His story is sure to make you chuckle—and perhaps even blush a bit!

Bernard, a retired railway employee, is still trying to come to terms with the fact that he is Ontario’s newest multi-millionaire after collecting his $40 million LOTTO MAX cheque during a recent OLG Winner Celebration. When you first meet Bernard, he appears to be shy and reserved, but as you get to know him, you quickly realize he’s witty with a dry sense of humour.  As he recounted the story of how he learned he’d hit the LOTTO MAX jackpot, he had everyone in stitches.

“For a couple of years, I’ve been buying two LOTTO MAX tickets a week—one for me and one for my daughter. Before I go to bed, I always tell her to pick one. This time, she picked the wrong one,” Bernard said with a smirk.

“My daughter wakes up very early for work, and the morning after the draw, she knocked on my bedroom door, waking me a from a deep sleep. She said, ‘Dad, I think you won $40 thousand on your LOTTO MAX ticket. I looked at her, half asleep, and replied, ‘That’s great! Now we can now both pay off our cars.” Bernard laid his head back on his pillow but was too excited to fall back asleep. “Five or ten minutes later, there was another knock on the door and my daughter said, ‘Um…Dad, I think you won $40 million!’ Now I really wanted to jump out of bed, but I couldn’t because I sleep in the nude. I would’ve hit the ceiling if I’d had underwear on!” Bernard laughed with a cheeky smile.

Despite all the excitement, Bernard’s daughter went to work, but she struggled to focus and knew her dad was thrilled at home, so she decided to leave early. “When my daughter came home, we both went to the store where I’d bought the ticket. We checked it at the lottery terminal, and it lit up like a Christmas tree!”   

Still overwhelmed by the news, Bernard hopped in his car. “I knew that would calm me down–a nice, long drive.” He wanted to go share the news with his long-time partner. “I told her I’d won $40 thousand –I couldn’t get that thought out of my mind. She didn’t believe me because I pull pranks on her all the time. I then told her I’d won $40 million and even showed her the ticket, but it didn’t convince her right away. In fact, I was having a difficult time even saying, ‘I won $40 million.’ It felt so surreal!”

The 79-year-old is an avid fisherman and music lover. With his winnings, he wants to buy a new fishing rod and a set of $3,000 speakers. When asked what he wanted to do with the remaining $39,996,800, he already knew the answer. “My daughter means a lot to me because, when my late wife and I had her, she was the only child we could have. She’s going to be well taken care of.”

Bernard also has a big family with many siblings and wants to help them as well. “I’ve dreamt about winning big money and sharing it with my family. It’s going to be a wonderful feeling to help them. I’ll be the favourite uncle for sure!”  

In addition to travelling—possibly including a cruise around Newfoundland, where he was born—he also wants to support some important health organizations. “There are several causes that are very close to my heart, and substantial donations will be made.”

This windfall has Bernard spending a lot of time reflecting on his life. While he has lived a good life so far, he said, “I now plan to live life to the fullest and have fun!”

Bernard purchased his winning LOTTO MAX ticket at Shell gas station on Taunton Road East in Oshawa.

Toronto, ON – A decision by a group of five co-workers from across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to purchase a LOTTO MAX ticket during the recent Lunar New Year period in January has turned each of them into Ontario’s newest multi-millionaires!

In Asian culture, the Lunar New Year is a very special time, traditionally associated with family, good fortune, health, and prosperity for the year ahead. To honour these traditions, group leader, Trang Pham, suggested to her co-workers from an area construction company that they buy a ticket for the January 21, 2025 LOTTO MAX draw. “About a week before Lunar New Year, I was buying creamer for the office and thought I’d pick up a ticket for the group,” recalled Trang. The very next day, the group discovered they’d won the $60 million LOTTO MAX jackpot!  

“I saw in the news that the $60 million LOTTO MAX winning ticket had been sold in Etobicoke, so I checked ours right away,” recounted Trang. “I reviewed the numbers myself and saw that one of the lines matched exactly. I couldn’t believe it, so checked the ticket again, this time on the OLG app. When I saw $60 million on the screen, I was in total shock. I took a screenshot and sent it to the group chat right away.”

A moment later, Trang’s phone started “blowing up” with calls and texts from her group members, each of whom would receive a $12 million cheque. Suong Tran said, “I was in a parking lot at work when the text came in. I thought Trang was teasing us, so I called her. When she confirmed it wasn’t a joke, I started shaking and crying tears of joy.” Phong Phan was also about to begin work when he saw the message. “I couldn’t believe it. Then I did. I was so happy…I didn’t know what was going on! So many emotions. I even checked the numbers myself. It was hard to act normal that day!” Phong told his fellow group members, Zou Hsieh and Thuc Le, since they were not on the group chat. Both were stunned and couldn’t eat or sleep for a couple of days after hearing the news.  

The reality that each group member was now a multi-millionaire didn’t fully set in until they were presented with their winnings by Jim Warren, OLG’s Chair of the Board of Directors, during a special Winner’s Celebration. Mr. Warren revealed the group’s $60 million cheque from a giant red envelope to honour the tradition of how gifts of money are presented during Lunar New Year.  

Each member of the winning group is still planning exactly how to make the best use of their incredible windfall, but they do have some bucket list items they want to fulfil.

Group leader Trang Pham says she wants to buy a home and share her winnings, “Purchasing a home has been a dream of mine since my parents relocated to Canada. They made so many sacrifices for me, and now it’s my time to take care of them. I also plan to make some investments and tap into my inner philanthropist.”

Phong Phan says he is too young to retire but wants to take some time off work and travel. “That’s been a dream of mine. I also want to start my own business, so I have a lot to think about. I’ll do that while I travel.”

Zou Hsieh was quick to announce that he is retiring right away. “Last year, I was worried about retiring, but now I don’t have to. I want to start travelling the world and see it all. I really hope to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights along the way.”

Thuc Le’s priority is family. “The first thing I want to buy is a house for my mother. I’ll share this win with my family and will also treat myself to a new car.”

Suong Tran says she needs some time to settle into her win. “I have many causes that are special to me that I want to support, so I’ll calmly consider all options before making any big decisions.”

The group purchased their LOTTO MAX ticket at Giant Tiger on Kipling Avenue in Etobicoke.

Toronto, ON – Eileen Grant of Scarborough won a $3 million top prize with INSTANT PLATINUM (Game #2206).

Eileen, a retiree, has been playing the lottery with OLG for many years. Her favourite games include DAILY KENO and a variety of INSTANT tickets. “My mom always played the lottery, and I suppose this rubbed off on me. Now, I enjoy playing too,” Eileen smiled. When selecting this specific ticket from the display case, Eileen could never have imagined it would lead her to her first big win.

“I played my ticket at the store and saw that I had matched three identical symbols and I thought, ‘Oh! This is a big winner!’ and smiled to myself,” Eileen recalled fondly, while visiting the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up her winnings. “I first told my kids and sent them a photo of the ticket. They cried happy tears for me, saying I deserved this prize.”

“I was always optimistic that I would win. When it happened, I was calm, happy, and peaceful,” said Eileen.

When asked what she plans to do with her windfall, Eileen shared that she wasn’t quite sure yet. “I want to settle into this win for bit before I make any big decisions. Winning this amount comes with a lot of responsibility. I want to make sure to get it right and make it last. I’ll be sure to share the joy by finding a way to help those who are the less fortunate in my community,” Eileen concluded.

INSTANT PLATINUM is available for $30 a play and the top prize is $3 million. Odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.48.

The winning ticket was purchased at The Ticket Shop on Overlea Boulevard in Toronto.

Toronto, ON – When Stephanie and Bryan Cantwell of Owen Sound would ride their motorcycles down their favourite route, they pass a house and a piece of property that always caught their eye. The dream of owning it passes quickly as they speed by. However, that dream came true once the couple discovered they had the winning $40 million ticket from the historic September 17, 2024 LOTTO MAX draw. That’s when the LOTTO MAX jackpot hit $80 million for the first time in Canadian lottery history. Stephanie and Bryan split the LOTTO MAX jackpot with another winning ticket sold in Quebec.

During a joyous winner celebration in Toronto, Bryan said he enjoys purchasing a LOTTO MAX and LOTTO 6/49 Quick Pick ticket once a week, usually from the same store where a friend of the family works. The story of the Cantwell’s $40 million win started when Bryan purchased a LOTTO MAX ticket in Iroquois Falls for the August 20^th draw. The couple were in the northern community for a family event. The day after the September 17^th draw, Bryan started checking his tickets on the OLG app. The ticket purchased in Iroquois Falls turned out not to be a winner. That $70 million winning ticket was purchased by a couple living in the community. Although slightly disappointed that he didn’t have that specific winning ticket, Bryan carried on scanning his other tickets. His frown quickly turned into a smile when he saw ‘Big Winner’ and ‘$40 million’ on the screen. “I was still in shock, so I checked some other tickets to ensure the app was working properly,” Bryan recounted. “I went back to the winning ticket and scanned it again and again. I think I checked it seven or eight times. The message remained the same – ‘Big Winner’ and ‘$40 million!’”

Stephanie was getting ready for work when Bryan barged into the bathroom and handed the phone to Stephanie while she was in the shower. “I wasn’t sure what was happening as he asked me to check the ticket. I thought I saw $40,000,” recalled Stephanie. “That’s when he told me to take a second look and I screamed!”

Although the couple were in disbelief that they were about to become multi-millionaires, they still got ready and headed to work. Stephanie worked in the packaging industry and Bryan in the skilled trades. “We both tried to carry on with the day like nothing had happened but that lasted about five minutes,” Stephanie laughed. The couple left their workplaces and decided to surprise the family friend who sold them the ticket at the store.

“I walked into the store the way I always do asking, ‘Did OLG call today?’,” Bryan laughed. With Stephanie looking on, Bryan handed their friend one ticket and the ‘WINNER/GAGNANT” sound rang out, but that ticket had won $20. Bryan then handed her another LOTTO MAX ticket. Their friend was left in shock when she realized she had validated the $40 million ticket. All three shared a wonderful moment together before OLG called the store to give them information about claiming this life-changing prize.

As the magnitude of the win starts to settle in, Stephanie, who is 47 years old and Bryan, who is 46 years old, say they have had moments of extreme excitement balanced with reality checks. “We have always been generous people and we dream of helping all the people we love,” said Stephanie. “But I am the budget queen, and we need to be careful to ensure we can make the most impact with this money for family, friends, and the community.” “This is generational wealth, and we want to make this last,” added Bryan.

One of the first people they want to help is Stephanie’s sister. “She is the most caring person I know, and we want to help her buy a new home,” said Stephanie. The couple will also help their parents and their children. “One request from our daughter is to refurbish an old Ford Bronco and as a car guy, I will be happy to help make that dream come true,” beamed Bryan.

It took the couple some time to finally think about what they want to do for themselves. In addition to buying their dream home, Bryan purchased a new motorcycle after an accident damaged his old bike a few weeks ago. “I have never gone into a motorcycle shop and pointed to a new bike. I was hoping to get a decent used one,” said Bryan.  Stephanie loves to travel and sees many sunny and warm destinations in their future.

And as the couple contemplate their future as multi-millionaires, they both said of this overwhelming experience, “Sometimes we just look at each other and laugh at this great fortune! It’s still unbelievable.”

Toronto, ON – To say it’s been a rollercoaster of a few weeks for Jennifer Stuart-Flynn and Kyle Murray of Iroquois Falls is an understatement. Jennifer and Kyle just welcomed a new baby into their family and, just days later, found out that they were Ontario’s newest multi-millionaires! The couple held the winning ticket for the $70 million LOTTO MAX jackpot from the August 20, 2024 draw.

Jennifer, 33, and Kyle, 39, had just returned home to Iroquois Falls from a Toronto hospital, where Jennifer had delivered their baby after a high-risk pregnancy. Kyle was waiting at the Timmins airport to pick up his mother, who was coming to help with the newborn. That’s when Jennifer texted Kyle, asking him to purchase a LOTTO MAX ticket after seeing on social media that the jackpot was at $70 million.

Kyle, who is originally from the U.S., had never bought a lottery ticket in Canada, despite having lived and worked here for several years. He asked the retailer for some help and purchased his very first LOTTO MAX and LOTTO 6/49 Quick Pick tickets with ENCORE.

When Kyle arrived home from the airport with his mother, he put the tickets on the fridge as a reminder to check them after the draw. Soon after the Tuesday August 20^th LOTTO MAX draw, Jennifer heard that the jackpot-winning ticket was sold in the Timiskaming/Cochrane region. She was at the kitchen table having cereal when she decided to check their ticket. “I scanned the ticket on the OLG App and heard the ‘Winner/Gagnant’ win tone,” recounted Jennifer. “I was in shock and not processing what was happening, so I shut down the OLG App and reopened it. I checked the ticket again and heard the same thing. That’s when I called out to Kyle!”

Kyle, who is in the financial technology industry and works from home, says he was busy with work when he heard Jennifer call his name. “I thought I heard ‘Winner/Gagnant’ coming from Jennifer’s phone in the kitchen, but I wasn’t completely focused on what she was saying until she yelled “I think we won!”  said Kyle. “I looked at her phone and read ‘$70 million winner,’ but I was trying to figure out if it was displaying the maximum prize or if we actually won $70 million. I felt light-headed and that sensation ran through my whole body!”

The first person to hear the incredible news was Kyle’s mom, who was staying with them to help with the baby. She couldn’t believe what was happening and was over the moon with excitement. Jennifer and Kyle decided to take Kyle’s mom and their kids for a secret celebration at a local restaurant. “We wanted to shout the news, but we knew that in our small town, this type of news would travel very fast. We had to be careful not to spill the beans throughout the entire dinner,” laughed Jennifer.

As for what Jennifer and Kyle plan to do with this overwhelming windfall, they both said, “We are carefully considering what to do with the $70 million because it’s a lot of money and it comes with a lot of responsibility.” Whenever Jennifer dreamed about winning the lottery, she always said she would buy her sister a new house, and now that’s at the top of her to-do list. “My sister is the most kind, loving, and generous person in the world, so I want to make sure she is taken care of,” she smiled. Next, Kyle and Jennifer want to ensure that their children have a wonderful life, so they plan to make a special purchase. “We want to buy some land to set up a little farm with chickens and a highland cow. We hope it will be a place where the kids can have fun and will want to return to as they get older,” explained Kyle.

While the couple were processing their good fortune during their winner celebration in Toronto, Kyle reflected on the recent past and the promising future ahead. “The last few years have been a struggle, and everything we did was to make a better life for the kids.” Jennifer added, “I realize my kids are going to have a much better life than I had and that makes me the most emotional. They are set and won’t have to wonder or worry about anything anymore.”

As they embark on this incredible journey, Jennifer and Kyle both agree, “We would not want anyone else by our side during this wild and unexpected experience.”

The $70 million winning LOTTO MAX ticket was purchased at Esso on Algonquin Boulevard in Timmins.

This LOTTO MAX jackpot win is the sixth jackpot win in a row in Ontario this year.
