With more than 30 years in the community, OLG has deep roots in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Ontario Lottery Corporation (predecessor organization to OLG) officially opened its headquarters in the city in January 1992. Since then, OLG has been one of the area’s largest employers—and has attracted other businesses, like Pollard Banknote, to establish operations and create jobs in the city.

OLG and its employees have a long history of giving back to Sault Ste. Marie. Each year, employees dedicate their time and energy to support their community—by taking part in events like the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup or raising funds to support United Way. And, since 2002, OLG has provided over $2 million to local events and festivals—including the Bon Soo Winter Carnival and ROTARYFEST.

OLG has been delivering world-class gaming entertainment to Sault Ste. Marie since the casino—Ontario’s first charity casino—opened in May 1999. The casino, which is now operated by Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited, has created jobs and supported businesses by purchasing locally. And, as host of the gaming site, the city has received millions of dollars in revenue, which it has invested in priority areas like infrastructure. The city put $13 million of casino revenue toward building the Sault Area Hospital, which opened in 2011 and employs over 1,700 people.

We’re proud of the role we play in strengthening the community — through the payments we provide the city for hosting a casino; our sponsorship of local events; and our support of local charities.

OLG was honoured to be recognized with a Community First Award at the 2019 Sault Ste. Marie Outstanding Business Achievement Awards in January 2019.

The Community First Award recognizes companies that contribute to the well-being of the community through initiatives such as sourcing products and/or services locally, retailing or utilizing local products, employment growth and supporting the community through charitable activities.

“Our contribution simply would not be possible without our employees in Sault Ste. Marie,” says Lisa Bell-Murray, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at OLG. “This award is an amazing recognition of their hard work and dedication to the community.”

OLG was chosen from among nominated companies with more than 26 employees.

The annual business awards are presented by the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce. For the 2019 awards, the Chamber received more than 160 nominations for 22 award categories.
