Majority of gamblers act responsibly

Recently, the topic of gambling has attracted a great deal of attention, especially because of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.’s interest in locating a casino in Waterloo Region. We, as researchers and local residents, have been following the one-sided debate that has emerged. While there is no doubt that problem gamblers are attracted to gambling venues, there is also evidence that a majority of people gamble responsibly whether in a casino or at a church bingo. Our research has found that many seniors (a low-risk group in general) welcome a casino’s safety, climate control, affordable meals and transportation and opportunity to socialize with family and friends.
