Each year, OLG gives back millions of dollars to communities that host gaming facilities. Municipalities use this money to fund projects like college and university campuses, hospitals, community centres, and charities.
The municipality of Central Huron directs some of the money it received as a host community to support the Huron Women’s Shelter. The organization provides safe housing, counselling and support that is critically important to women and children who are escaping abuse.
In September 2019, the Shelter organized the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event for a second year. “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” had its start in California and has since been adopted by Violence Against Women organizations across the globe. Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and families are joining the movement. The walk in Goderich—and others like it around the world—sends a strong message that we all must take a stand against sexual assault and gender violence.
We are proud to invest the money we receive as a gaming host community in services that benefit the people of Central Huron—particularly those most in need.
“We are proud to invest the money we receive as a gaming host community in services that benefit the people of Central Huron—particularly those most in need,” says Jim Ginn, Mayor of Central Huron. “The work of the Huron Women’s Shelter is so important to our community and our partnership with OLG is helping ensure the Shelter has the resources it needs.”
Central Huron’s support of the Huron Women’s Shelter is one example of how OLG’s contribution to its host communities is making life better for people across the province. Videos of how past OLG proceeds help communities fund programs are posted on our website.
